Why should you become more physically active?
It is well known that being physically active is good for your health.
Getting active can help you:
-
control or reduce your weight
-
reduce fatigue, boost energy and improve sleep
-
improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety and depression
-
increase confidence
-
improve symptoms of heart and circulatory conditions like angina pain in the long term (BHF)
-
reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, lowering your risk of getting heart and circulatory diseases like heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementia (BHF)
-
improve flexibility, balance and motor skills
-
increase muscular strength/endurance and cardiovascular fitness
-
reduce the risk of some cancers coming back (CRUK)
-
prevent or improve lymphoedema
-
improve quality of life during and after cancer treatment
-
improve blood glucose and insulin sensitivity
-
and above all, get you back to your 'new' normal, driving again, looking after dependants, back to work etc
The UK Government, European Guidelines (ESC2011) and World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) recommend you do:
-
more than 150 mins per week of moderate aerobic activity e.g. 30 mins x 5 days per week of brisk walking, dancing, riding a bike
-
or more than 75 mins of vigorous activity per week e.g. running, swimming, skipping
-
muscular strengthening activities on more than 2 days per week e.g. resistance exercises or yoga
-
flexibility exercises more than twice per week with daily being the most effective
It's important to understand that everyone is different and exercise needs to be tailored to you, your fitness level and diagnosis and that's were I can support you, so let me introduce myself...
Hi, my name is Geraldine
I have been working in the fitness industry for 30+ years as a Personal Trainer, Group Exercise Instructor and an award-winning Corporate Fitness Manager.
I am a qualified L4 Cancer & Cardiac Exercise Specialist and work remotely with people living with and beyond cancer and/or cardiovascular disease.
If you live in the SO31 area in Hampshire, then I can come and support you in person in the comfort of your own home.
I have a particular interest and experience working with Head & Neck cancer patients during and after treatment, with or without feeding tubes including those who have had reconstructive surgery using scapula, forearm, thigh or fibula flaps, and also those living with secondary breast cancer who want to get back into fitness but are not sure what they should or should not be doing -
I can help you!
I provide a bespoke, person-centred style to my services, offering choice, encouraging initiative by giving confidence and support to help you achieve your goals, no matter where you are on your cancer journey.
I have a keen interest in resistance, balance and stability training, bone density health and can add additional support to those of you who are experiencing treatment related fatigue and lymphoedema. If you are going or gone through the menopause, I can provide you with strategies to help you with sleeping better and managing your energy.
And don't worry if you haven't got the latest fitness equipment to hand as I can show you how you can achieve your goals by simply using a cushion off your sofa or tinned foods from your kitchen cupboard.
